Álvaro Vargas Llosa is an award-winning writer and author focusing on developing countries and international affairs. He is a Senior Fellow at the Independent Institute, where he previously directed the Center on Global Prosperity, and writes a weekly Spanish-language column for La Tercera (Chile) alongside a monthly English column distributed internationally.

Educated at the London School of Economics, where he earned a BSc in International History, he later completed a master's in value investing and economic-cycle theory in Spain. His journalism has carried him from the Washington Post and the Miami Herald to the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and the BBC World Service.

He is the author of Liberty for Latin America, The Che Guevara Myth and Global Crossings: Immigration, Civilization, and America, among other works. His honours include the Sir Antony Fisher International Memorial Award, the Templeton Freedom Award, and recognition by Foreign Policy among the top public intellectuals of the Spanish-speaking world. In 2007 the World Economic Forum named him a Young Global Leader.
